Today we’re bringing you seven new songs off of Famous Monsters, the new full length from Vegas punk rock band The Psyatics, recorded by Brian Garth (Black Camaro) and mastered by Mike “Lazer” Lavin (The Pluralses).
Famous Monsters is the third full length from the band and a true collaborative effort from its three members. “Typically, I will come up with a rhythmic bass line and scat a melody/lyric meter, then come up with a story/lyrics” explains The Psyatics’ bassist and vocalist Rob Bell. “Partially constructed, I will bring it to Jack [Ball, guitar] to flesh out our particular sound and structure the songs. Mark [Baertschi, drums] is the newest member, joining 24 hours before heading into the studio (a real trial by fire), and he did a stellar job.”
The band’s unique style drew from a wide variety of bands when creating Famous Monsters, as Bell explains: “Our influences vary wildly, from the garage rock of Reigning Sound to The Birthday Party, Red Medicine Fugazi and Django Reinhardt – and our influences can also be heard in the few cover songs we perform by The Oblivions, Dirtbombs, Hoodoo Gurus, The Velvet Underground and The Banana Splits.”
Fans of the band will get to see them live, as well as pick up a physical copy of the album, on Aug. 19 at The Double Down, a place that earned the band’s respect through its embrace of diversity. “We love the Double Down because it’s one of the longest lasting live music dives in town, and they respect what we do,” Bell explains. “This is a place that constantly surprises. Within the same night you can catch rockabilly, surf and punk ranging from amazing to God-awful – but it’s always a good time. We assembled a few of our friends to join us at the release (The Pluralses, Tito Mojito and Swamp Pussy) and picked them because these are a few bands that we dig…simple as that.”
The band also has plans for a west coast tour, so stay tuned for further details. In the meantime, fans in Vegas have four chances to catch The Psyatics in the coming months:
Friday, Aug. 19 Double Down (Psyatics CD release)
Saturday, Aug. 20 House Of Blues (with The Gabba Gabba Heys and Mommys Little Monster)
Saturday, Oct. 1 Double Down
Friday, Oct. 21 Double Down (with UK punk legends The Vibrators)
