Sad news this morning. According to the OCWeekly, Lloyd Knibb, born March 8, 1931 in Jamaica, passed away last night at the age of 80. Knibb was suffering from illness and had recently returned home to Jamaica to be with loved ones.
Knibb was a true legend in his field, an exceptional and highly influential drummer who defined ska beats as a founding member of pioneering Jamaican ska group The Skatalites. He also recorded with numerous other artists throughout his long career, including Bob Marley, Prince Buster, and Tommy McCook & The Supersonics.
Knibb was scheduled to play in Las Vegas on May 29 at the Las Vegas Country Saloon with the rest of The Skatalites as part of the Punk Rock Bowling festival. No official announcement has been made as of yet regarding the status of this show.
Our hearts go out to Knibb’s family and friends.
