When Descendents were announced as returning headliners for this year’s Punk Rock Bowling, I hoped, prayed and wished that sister band ALL (featuring Descendents members Bill Stevenson, Karl Alvarez and Stephen Egerton) would also make their return to Vegas. I was playing a show the night they played a Punk Rock Bowling club show in 2011, and I’ve been kicking myself ever since. So thankfully, my wish was granted and I found myself right up front at Fremont Country Club on May 24 to watch the legends show everyone how it’s done.
This time, we only had one vocalist but it was my favorite – Chad Price, sporting a pretty badass beard. Price was the group’s third singer and his rough, whiskey-soaked vocals sounded perfect on ALL classics like “Original Me,” “She’s My Ex,” a song I consider to be the gold standard for pop punk, and “World’s on Heroin,” a track that acted as the introduction to the band for many people my age due to its inclusion on the Punk-O-Rama series.
Since the day festival ran late and I wasn’t about to miss any of Cock Sparrer, I ended up missing openers ToyGuitar, but since the band features the prolific Jack Dalrymple of One Man Army/Dead to Me/Swingin’ Utters/ a million other bands, I have to imagine that they were fantastic. Punk rockers The Briefs and recent Fat Wreck signees Night Birds rounded out the night.
