Canadian pop punk band Sum 41 made their way to Las Vegas last month, performing at the Brooklyn Bowl for the second to last show of the tour celebrating 15 years of their Does This Look Infected?, a tour where they played the album in its entirety and brought along openers Seaway and Super Whatevr.
The house lights shut off and the band hit the stage, starting the set with opening track “The Hell Song.” Instantly the crowd went from standing around to a hailstorm of fans screaming, pushing, jumping, crowd surfing and, of course, moshing.
The band stopped halfway through their full album set to play a medley of metal hits, including Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall,” the latter of which tacked on to the band’s own “Billy Spleen. Sum 41 also included a drum solo tribute to to Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, with Frank Zummo playing over LP hits like “One Step Closer” and “Faint.” The last cover was of the Queen song “We Are The Champions” and it sounded awesome with their heavy riffing punk sound.
Sum 41’s main set ended with Infected track “Hooch,” but, of course, there was more to come. The five piece walked back on stage for their encore, closing the show with their classic songs “Motivation” and “Fat Lip,” and everyone in the venue going ballistic one last time.
All in all, I had a great time at the show. As for Sum 41? They were full of energy, getting the crowd pumped, showing they belong on that stage and making it look so easy, which I’m sure isn’t difficult after two decades.
