Today we’re bringing you a stream of “Some Kind Of Way,” the debut single from Vegas indie rock band Demi Vie, from their upcoming EP Little War. The single will be available to download tomorrow via the group’s Bandcamp.
If the vocals sound familiar it’s because Demi Vie is lead by Vegas singer/songwriter Joshua Greenway, who PIV readers should know from the session we filmed with him last year, as well as from countless local gigs and open mic performances. This new project, which draws inspiration from the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Silversun Pickups, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, and Young The Giant, finds the troubadour backed by a full band.
“I started the band last year and have been piecing together musicians this whole time,” explains Greenway. “I’m working with Scott Wright on guitar and keys, Tim O’Nell on drums, Reanna Merstik on backing vocals and Jon Wozniak on bass (David Espinoza is actually playing the bass on the track though). The name has sort of a double-meaning: It’s french for Half-Life (the time for a quantity to reduce to half of its initial value) which is a call-out to the video game franchise, but also reflects a lot of what I write about: Relationships falling apart, losing yourself in something, addiction and the impact it has on a person, and sort of the opposites of those things. Finding yourself and your way in the world. I like to write about things I’ve experienced, or I see other people going through and take them to extremes.”
The band recorded this song (as well as the EP) right here in Vegas at Naked City Audio with John Kiehlbauch. While Demi Vie isn’t Greenway’s first band, it is already his most cohesive. “The writing experience has been amazing” Greenway explains. “I’ve played in a few bands over the years, but it’s never been quite as organic as all of this. I get a framework of a song together with lyrics and the rest of the guys just vibe with me and find these perfect parts to compliment the thought or emotion I’m conveying in a section of the song or overall. It’s been super organic; we have about 14 songs we’re working on to release as two EPs and they’ve just flown together musically in no time.”
Fans of the song are going to have to wait a little bit to see them live, though Greenway promises it’ll be sooner rather than later: “We’re actually trying to get some stuff booked now! Nothing on paper yet unfortunately. We’re trying to release the whole EP by end of August (we still have some recording to do, I was just too excited about this song not to post it early).”
Update: Demi Vie will be performing live on July 22 at Backstage Bar with ConWaves and Leaving Springfield.
