Five Questions with Marky Ramone

While most people would be content with just being known as a member of one of the best bands of all time, Marky Ramone has continued to stay busy, whether it’s creating his own pasta sauce, touring with Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg, or hosting a radio show on Sirius-XM. Marky’s most recent venture is as author, having penned ‘Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life as a Ramone’ with Richard Herschlag. The book comes out next week, but Marky will be signing copies this Wednesday, January 7 at the Barnes and Noble at 2191 North Rainbow Blvd. We had a quick chat with Marky in preparation of the event.

Since you’re on tour promoting your new book Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life as a Ramone, (with a Vegas appearance on 1/7), I’ve got to know, who are your favorite authors? And what is your all-time favorite book?

I don’t have a list of favorite authors. I enjoy reading biographies and autobiographies. Also books about history and also the music biz. Right now I am reading “Peppermint Twist” by John Johnson and Joel Selvin, it’s great, I am really enjoying it.

Favorite books change over time and with my day job being that of Youth Services Librarian, I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask what your favorite book was growing up? Do you remember the first book you really connected with?

Yes – Frankenstein.

It’s safe to say that without the Ramones, the musical landscape would be very different. We wouldn’t have bands ranging from Descendents to Teenage Bottlerocket to Mixtapes. Do you keep up with the current punk rock scene? Who are your favorite recent bands?

Yes, I have a show on Sirius-XM in it’s 10th year and all I play is punk rock.  I want to be diplomatic and not list any particular bands…

When can we expect some more tunes from you? May I suggest the formation of a punk rock authors super group with Mr T Experience/King Dork’s Frank Portman?

When I get some down time to record some.  I was just in S.A. and Europe and now with the book coming out I am focused on promoting it.

Can we expect any more writing from you? Have you considered delving into writing fiction?

Funny you should ask…I am thinking about writing some sci-fi next.

Thanks, Marky! The book signing takes place Wednesday, January 7 at the Barnes and Noble at 2191 North Rainbow Blvd. Marky is only signing books; no memorabilia, no posed photos. The book will be available to purchase at the event even though the actual release date is January 13. He’ll sign as many books as a person has purchased. More information can be found on the Barnes and Noble website.

And if you can’t make the signing, may I recommend reserving a copy of the book from your local library here?
