Apologies for the lateness of this review, but I’ve decided that moving forward I’m just going to become the procrastinated reviewer. This past couple of months there’s been some absolute bangers in Vegas like Frank Turner, Subhumans, New Found Glory, and Less Than Jake. While it’s great to see these legends, It’s important to remember that all of these bands were once nameless openers at small DIY gigs grinding their way across their respective country trying to rummage up a following. So even if it’s a bit late, I think it’s important that we try and highlight some of the talented acts that are putting in work today just to share their noise and message. It would also be absolutely criminal if we didn’t try to distribute the fantastic shots shared with us by Rachel Skye.
So let’s start by giving a shout-out to the venue; American Legion Post 8. From what I’ve gathered, Post 8 seems to have been established as a hardcore staple prior to COVID thanks to the hard work of Blackpath booking. I have to admit that I’m a relatively new attendee to the venue, but it’s become one of my favorite spots to catch a show. VFW halls are a classic DIY venue, the shows are typically all ages, and the bar area feels cozy.
In keeping with my “better late than never” theme, I completely missed Dissociate. I tried to catch a nap between putting baby girl to bed and the show. I don’t know anything about this band yet, so we’ll have to make it a point to catch their next show. Our next chance is on October 2nd, they’ll opening for Koyo.
The setup at Post 8 is always a little different depending on who booked the show. This night they were rocking no stage, you basically walked into ‘stage left’ and had to shimmy your way across the wall or get swallowed into the crowd. I walked in during HpH’s set. I promised to never say a kind word about them, so here are some objective facts. There was a full-blown pit during what I caught of their set. People were singing along with the band. This has been my experience over the many years I have seen them. This would lead one to believe that this long-standing Vegas staple has historically and to date appealed to some contingent of Vegas folks.
While I caught up with some old friends at the bar Azijnpisser was setting up. Hailing from the Netherlands, they were fucking ferocious. They had a thrashy hardcore punk sound. I also enjoyed the dualistic nature of their singer, jumping from frenetic energy to polite, reserved gratitude towards the audience between songs. The rest of the crowd was all in on their set. I expect there were a couple of sore necks the next day. They seem like a relatively new band, so it was a real treat to have the opportunity to see them this far from home. I think we have their tour-mates Generation Decline to thank for helping them stateside.
I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t seen Generation Decline before. I’ve even visited their home Bremerton on multiple occasions for punks’ sake. Long-time friends of the Anti-vision crew, Generation Decline was my cup of tea. The self-described “politically charged punk/crust group” were unapologetic in their presentation. Clearly stating the thesis of their songs before again stirring the crowd into a frenzy. I’m a fan of riffs so I appreciated the hooks they tossed in. They added some more texture to their songs. I would make it a point to catch them again.
Anti-vision closed out the night, and without any intent to disrespect, I spent about half their set chatting it up at the bar with the homies. Anti-vision has been crushing it since they came out somewhere in 2016. I still remember when I first saw these baby punks tear into their set and deliver a performance better than some of my favorite punk acts. They’re sincere in their love of music. It shows in their commitment to touring, supporting their scene, and addiction to writing. Instead of reading my bull shit review, I highly recommend you make it a point to catch them this Friday, August 26th at the Los Ataskados CD release.
