Holding Onto Sound’s June 3 show at the Gypsy Den saw the band playing their 2007 debut album from start to finish. Nothing was skipped, meaning local poet Amir Rikkah was on hand, jumping on stage twice to deliver his spoken word tracks in person. Probably most impressive, though, was that second guitarist Robert Gates, a recent addition to the band, learned the entire album in under a week. And if that wasn’t enough, the band ended their set by answering pleas for the fast-paced “Tommy Boy,” off their latest album The Sea. The crowd’s resulting frenzy whipped up a mushroom cloud of dust.
