I honestly can’t remember a show as fun as Last Call’s August 5th release show for Stay on the Outside, the band’s debut for label Mightier Than Sword. It’s not just that the tunes are so good – they are and luckily my position with this site allowed me to learn the words in advance of the show so I could sing along – but the atmosphere was just perfect.
The VFW-style Knight Hall was packed with fans not just from Vegas. Friends and family from all over actually flew in to share this moment with the band which is really something special. Friends I haven’t seen at shows in years also came out to show their support, which was nice. I also like that Last Call didn’t just have tables set up for band merch but also for local entrepreneurs like Deadweight Clothing. I think it’s great to see a band working to build up a community here.
Last Call was all smiles while playing, powering through tracks like “Keyholes” and “Long Distance” from the new album. Of course the older tracks still got the biggest response, with “Slow Motion” and especially “Glassell St.” from the band’s 12:57 7” resulting in an avalanche of kids descending upon vocalist Austin Jeffers for a chance to sing along. Last Call are getting ready to leave on tour in support of the new record and I can’t wait for the rest of the country to get to hear these songs live.
