It’s been awhile since Lemuria last played Vegas. As a fan, it always bummed me out that their previous Vegas shows were under-attended, so I jumped at the chance for Punks in Vegas to sponsor their show at Beauty Bar this time around- especially after finding out that Katie Ellen (ex-Chumped) and Dusk were opening.
The show was on a Sunday, the day after our own Shell Corporation show, which was just a few feet away at Backstage Bar. The weather Saturday wasn’t pleasant, with Downtown Vegas looking more like Hill Valley on the night of the huge lightning storm. Even though the weather had since calmed down, the streets were still littered with fallen signs and debris caused by high winds, and the power hadn’t yet returned to all the street lights.
Despite all of this, there were still significantly more people at this show than at past ones. Lemuria came on around 11 p.m. (hooray for three band shows on work nights!) and sounded fantastic. This was my first time seeing them play as a four piece, with the second guitar really making everything sound full and nice.
The band’s set was pulled heavily from their 2008 debut full-length Get Better (featuring “Dogs,” “Lipstick,” “Buzz”) and last year’s Recreational Hate (“Timber Together,” “Sliver of Change,” “Christine Perfect” were included). The band called up Dusk member Ryley Crowe back to the stage to play the steel pedal on the country-tinged “Kicking In.” It was also his birthday, so the band, as well as the members of Katie Ellen and Dusk, celebrated by singing him Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places.” The other band members also helped the band sing (from the crowd) the closing song “Pants” as a cool breeze blew in.
