Music: Light ‘Em Up ‘Wishful Thinking’

Today we’re bring you a full stream of Wishful Thinking, the new EP from Vegas ska/pop punk band Light ‘Em Up. It was recorded by Andy Beldy at the Electric Shop.

So who is Light ‘Em Up?

“We came together as fragments from different bands” explains Light ‘Em Up guitarist Alex Brustad. “Ronnie [DiVito, lead vocals] recruited a drummer, bassist and guitarist from bands that were falling through, and then next thing you know we’re like fucking Spinal Tap and have shifted through 5 different guys. So the current line-up is Ronnie, Johnny [Vega, bass], Tony [Spataro, drums] and myself on rhythm guitar.”

The band’s name came from a somewhat unusual source, but one that’s perfectly Vegas. “Ronnie decided on the name one night, we were down on Fremont and a bunch of drag racers pulled up to the stoplight” Brustad explains. “Ronnie thought he should be a part of it, and proceeded to act like a flag girl and kept yelling ‘light ’em up!’ And so it stuck.”

The band’s blend of ska and pop punk wears its influences as its sleeve, as Brustad describes, “We all listen to the same music, so whatever we’re listening to at the time kinda comes through with our writing. At the time we recorded [Wishful Thinking], it was bands like Less Than Jake to The Flatliners to New Found Glory. We all enjoy punk, ska, pop punk, and want to kinda get a blend of it that we portray as us. We think this ep shows that we’re a good mix of punk.”
