Today we’re bringing you a full stream of Ghosts, the new EP from Las Vegas skatepunk band War Called Home. These songs were recorded in Las Vegas with Jonas Vece and feature a lyric sheet designed by Brock Frabbiele.
Ghosts is the third in the band’s Saturday Mornings Trill-EP series, a series that also included Origins and Defenders. And if any of you caught the band’s Halloween gig with Anchors (or saw our gallery) you’ll know that the band is huge into Ghostbusters, so the busting motif should come as no surprise.
According to the band “The decision to use Ghostbusters was established long ago when we were building what would become our Saturday Mornings Trill-EP. When debating which nostalgic properties we wanted to spoof Ninja Turtles (Origins) was first and Ghostbusters (Ghosts) was second; Voltron (Defenders) came after discussing some other possibilities. It wasn’t really that intentional, but the set of songs that ended up on Ghosts are among the darkest that War Called Home has written. It kind of worked out to play to the whole spooky thing.”
The first Ghostbusters is an undeniable classic, but the second is pretty great as well. So which one is more popular amongst the band? According to the guys, “I am pretty sure that we can safely say Ghostbusters 1 would be our favorite as a band. Stay Puft, Hell Hounds and Zuul = pure awesomeness. The first one seemed to have a little bit more heart too; like it had a healthier blend of character, comedy and ghost action. The second one seemed to be mostly ‘look we have proton packs and there is pink slime.’ Over the last summer when the 30th Anniversary remaster was playing in theaters, we went to the theatre as a band at Galaxy Theaters. Dave [Bartlett, drummer] even brought his working ectometer… good times. But I think we can all agree that Vigo from Ghostbusters 2 was pretty friggin’ bad ass.”
Being that the band is so into the original series of films, we had to see what they thought about the upcoming reboot. “As far as the upcoming movie and new cast is concerned,” explains WCH, “The official War Called Home position is that we are excited to see a new one, all for trying a new format with an all or mostly female cast, and Seth [Spicer, guitar] at least is a big Kristen Wiig fan. We wish them the best and hope for an awesome film.”
Outside of the movie franchise, Ghostbusters also existed as an excellent cartoon series, which Ghost’s cover is in the style of. Asked if the band is equally as into the series, they explain “The cover artwork for the EP heavily references The Real Ghostbusters animated series first and foremost because we all have very fond memories of watching that when we were younger. Also Dave picked up the very rad Firehouse Box set sometime last year. Then it became about wanting to see Joe [Dye, bass] as Slimer, because that is just amazing.”
