Welcome to Before You Were Punk, an interview feature here on Punks in Vegas where we ask your favorite musicians and music biz aficionados one simple question: what made you the music fan you are today?
Our latest installment comes from Giles Bidder, singer and guitarist for East London punks Great Cynics, who released Don’t Need Much on Kind of Like Records this past June. Want to know what punk album really made a difference to Bidder? Then read on:
It wasn’t the one that turned me on to punk rock, but the first album which really made a difference to me was Descendents – Milo Goes To College. It blew me away that these songs were being played by kids my own age; I always thought punk rock was for people older than me but this album made me feel like I was part of something.
I knew nothing about the band – I didn’t know what they looked like, talked like or jumped around like on stage. But that didn’t matter. All I had were these songs that made me feel like there was someone else in the world who feels just the way I do.
It has fast, melodic and gnarly songs about everything from unrequited love to living in a suburban bubble and being pissed off at your parents. That’s all I wanted and needed!
