Review: Pentimento “Pentimento” (2012)

Self-released (2012)
Sounds Like: Melodic punk rock; well-written and unapologetically heartfelt.

Score: 9.5/10

As music fans, we rarely consider the business side of it all. We don’t think about royalties or lawsuits, we think about stage dives and guitar tabs. So it sure is lame when those things cast a dark shadow over quality music. Pentimento’s debut self-titled full length was supposed to have been released through Paper + Plastick and Black Numbers, but after receiving threats of legal action from their former label Panic Records, they decided to put it out for free. I now know the feeling bank robbers get when driving away with their pillowcases full of loot.

Pentimento is one of the most talented bands taking stages these days, and this record is sure to impress get-go fans as well as those late to the party. It illustrates everything in their repertoire; fiery vocals (you get the sense he’s singing through a snarl sometimes), gut-wrenching lyrics, polished musicianship, and seamless tempo changes.

I love the shifty bass line on “Conscience (Consequence)” and I guarantee you’ll go hoarse from screaming along to lines like “I can’t stay stuck like this. I can’t stay stuck like this forever.” “Days Away” might just have the best hook on the record, not to mention great writing and guitar work. “The Bridge” steals the show, though and acts as proof of how important thoughtful songwriting is to this band. Heavy-hearted “Subtle Words” successfully deviates from the usual template with its sweeping guitars and crooning vocals. “For Winter” and “On Summer” work well together to close the curtain on the record. My only complaint is that I wish “For Winter” was half an hour longer.

This is a special record. Not only because of the band that made it, but also because of the strenuous circumstances under which it was released. Whether it’s with your wallet or by simply pressing “play,” make sure you go out and support this band.
