Sounds Like: Two great bands, showing off their range

Score: 8/10

The recent split release by Los Angeles hardcore outfit Touché Amoré and veteran Kansas City indie rockers The Casket Lottery is short and sweet, featuring an original song and a cover by each band.

Touché Amoré maintain their usual style at the EP’s outset, showcasing familiar yells and a barrage of percussion on “Whale Belly.” Lines like “hello repercussions, I know you all too well/this is my cross to bear, I am a living hell” show that they’re still some of the best writers in the hardcore world. Their next song on the split is a cover of the The Replacements’ “Unsatisfied.” It’s definitely a different sound for Touché and while well done, it’s a little bland for my taste.

The Casket Lottery really shines on this split. “White Lies” is a mellow jam with a soaring, catchy chorus, high, clear vocals, winding guitar licks and a brooding melody. For their second song, The Casket Lottery chose to cover Beach House’s “Myth.” Not yet a year old, the vibrant, groovy indie song fits this band’s style well.

Whether it’s their own songs previewing future projects, or cover songs to show range, Touché Amoré and The Casket Lottery have combined to form a great release. Listen to the songs now over on NoSleepSampler.com, and if you like what you hear, pick it for just $3.
