As you’ve probably heard, local all-ages staple Yayo Taco has closed its doors after once again being cited and fined for health code violations.
If you never had the pleasure, Yayo is a place where bands don’t pay to play, shows are always free, the tacos are delicious and you’re always greeted kindly by staff. We refuse to talk about Yayo in the past tense because we’re keeping up hope that they’ll reopen soon, and we’re not the only ones.
Local bands jumped to action immediately when they heard about the misfortune that had befallen owner Cho Yiu. There will be a benefit show at Yayo tomorrow tonight, March 1 at 4:30 p.m. with Caravels, Holding Onto Sound, 1819, Stolas, Alaska, Habit, InReflect, Oranges and These Colors with in between band sets from Johnathan Contini and Cave Zumie . All donations will go to helping Cho pay the over $700 in fines he owes to the Southern Nevada Health District so he can reopen the doors.
We couldn’t be more appreciative of the role that Yayo has played in this town’s music scene, and if you’re as sad as we are to see it go, we’ll see you there with a handful of cash to help this place get back on their feet. In the words of local band Alaska, “Yayos was one of the only places where we felt at home…I think it’s because it wasn’t ever about us or the shop even, more about what it represented. A real community of people who understood the difficulties of touring and that traveling bands need your change more than you do. We can’t stress the relevance and importance of the shop to people enough.”
As a reminder of our current state of affairs, this is just the most recent closure in a long string of local all-ages venues shutting their doors. East Side Joe’s is currently out of commission, and The Box Office is no longer doing shows. We need a place for kids to play. We need Yayo.
